The College of Foreign Languages and Culture was originally called Foreign Languages Department that was established in 1995, and was renamed the College of Foreign Languages and Culture in 2003. After nine years of construction, the school has made substantial progress. The school is composed of the English Department, Japanese Department, College English Teaching Department, multi-media Teaching Center, and the Foreign Language Training Center. The English specialty has two orientations: International Business and Translation for Business Affairs; the Japanese Specialty has its orientation for International Business. The school has a faculty of 98. Among them there are 6 professors, 8 associate professors, 4 doctoral degree holders, 5 Ph. D candidates and 7 overseas teachers (foreign experts).
Over these years, the School undertook and completed one National Philosophy and Social Science Foundation Project and 14 provincial projects. The School also published three books, two translated works, more than 40 textbooks, foreign language teaching reference texts and foreign language reference books, and more than 280 academic papers.
The English Specialty (International Business) began to enroll students since 1995. Over 400 qualified students have graduated since. With their accomplishment and ability, they are welcomed by employers, thus contribute to the construction and development of Guangdong and other provinces in South China. In 2003, students from the English Specialty were awarded Championship at Oral English Competition of Guangdong Province, First-place Award at 7th “FLTAP CUP” National English Debating Competition of South China and Third Award at 7th “FLTAP CUP” National English Debating Competition Finals.
The Japanese (International Business) started to enroll 30 students each year from the year 2003.
The English Specialty was acknowledged by the University of Guangdong Business Studies as its key specialty financially supported in 2001, and was acknowledged as core specialty to construct. Due to its specific training target, depth of students’ English language, outstanding features of commercial orientation and advantages of teaching, the English Specialty has become a competitive and influential specialty among fellow specialties in colleges and universities in Guangdong and even South China. In Nov. 2004, as one of the experimental units of English specialty undergraduate teaching evaluation of Education Department, the English Specialty (International Business) of the College of Foreign Languages and Culture has successfully passed the evaluation; its teaching was highly praised by the evaluation panel.
