Established in January 2005, the College of Economics
and Statistics is an amalgamation of the original School
of Economics & International Trade and Department
of Statistics. The original School of Economics &
Trade was established in July 2000, also an amalgamation
of the original Department of International Economy
& Trade, Modern Economics and Development Academy.
This college is made up of three departments and one
academy, i.e. Department of International Economy &
Trade, Department of Economics, Department of Statistics
and Economy Academy. It has four undergraduate specialties,
i.e. international economy & trade, international
business, economics and statistics, and one postgraduate
program of national economics. Now it has a staff team
of 68 which includes 9 professors and 20 associate professors,
19 of whom hold doctoral degrees.
The college
has harvested a lot of achievements by means of sticking
to pushing forward teaching by scientific research,
encouraging innovation, and advocating academic contention.
Since 1999, the college has undertaken 44 research projects
at the departmental level and above, among which, 4
are national projects, 2 is the Guangdong Provincial
natural science funded project, and 15 are department
or ministry projects. In addition, it has also undertaken
5 joint research projects. It has published 15 monographs
and 13 textbooks. The college staff has had 500 academic
essays published in Chinese and foreign academic journals.
The college has won four prizes for their teaching and
scientific research production from the Province and
the Ministry of Education and 22 prizes from various
academic associations. At present, three collegiate
key specialties: National Economics, International Trade
and Statistics have been established, among which International
Trade is ranked as both a provincial and collegiate
key specialty. Political Economics is one of the provincial-level
excellent courses and Western Economics and International
Trade are the top-quality courses of the university.
Mathematical Statistics and Theory of Social Economic
Statistics are among the key courses in Guangdong Province.
National Economic Statistics, Investment and Production
Analysis, Econometrics are ranked excellent courses
in GUBS. The college emphasizes computer–based experimental
teaching and has set up an Economy Prediction and Decision
Simulation Lab, developed computerized teaching and
a case analysis system for economy prediction and decision,
which guarantees experimental work for both teachers
and students in teaching and research.
Students
from this college have a good command of specialty knowledge.
At the same time, they take an active part in scientific
research projects. Every year a number of research projects
are supported by the university. Two research essays
among the published papers have been cited in their
entirety by the Social Sciences Information Center of
The People’s Republic of China. Its students have won
the second prize in the “Challenge Cup” College Students
Scientific and Technological Productions Competition
in Guangdong Province and also won the third prize in
the “Challenge Cup” Chinese College Students Creation
Programs Competition. Its students also achieved second
and third places in the 2nd and 3rd “Higher Education
Cup” national college students invitational online teaching
tournaments. They have also won the first, second and
third awards many times in Chinese and American College
students mathematics modeling competitions.
The college
cultivates students by means of practicing a “three-dimensional”
education model, namely, to build graduated student
of “solid foundation, broad horizon, strong ability,
high quality, good Employment Prospect, new knowledge
and quick mastery”. Students so cultivated have a wide
range and high rate of Employment Prospects.
